Rotary flight intermezzo
If there is time
A short detour from our basic guide into flight simming is the following helicopter flight.
Briefing
The goal of this flight is to get familiarized with the helicopters in P3D. To be honest we have to admit that the flight models in P3D (and FSX for that matter) are not very realistic. But we can hover a little bit and use our throttles as a fake collective.
Also we can practice navigating by visual landmarks to get to our destination.
There is an urgent request to pick up an injured farmer from heliport Midden Zeeland (EHMZ). The poor man needs to get to a hospital as soon as possible. We'll return to Zestienhoven (Rotterdam Airport / EHRD) as quick as we can.
Standard Safety and Emergency Procedures apply.
WX: The weather is fine so there are no restrictions today. It is still CAVOK and winds are light and variable.
- TYPE: We will be making a VFR (Visual Flight Rules) flight.
- AC ID / PIC: You will be PIC (Pilot in Command) in a Sikorsky H-60M MEDEVAC or equivalent.
- DEP: Departure airport EHRD.
- ROUTE: routing will be your prerogative as PIC
- DEST: Destination is the same as DEP: EHRD.
- ALTITUDE(s): Recommended flight altitude will be between 500 and 2500 feet.
- ETD (Estimated Time of Departure): Departure time will be around noon (12:00h UTC)
- ETE (Est'd Time Enroute): The flight, including return, will be 00:40' long appx.
Chart
Find the map here
The two large red arrows indicate DEP (EHRD) and EHMZ heliport. The little arrows are indications of enroute visual cues or landmarks that may guide you to the heliport and back using the VFR sectional chart (Skyvector). You could or even should apply Dead Reckoning to be well prepared, but we'll leave that for another time.
On the return flight you could overfly the "Maasvlakte" and approach EHRD from the west..
